Niagara Falls Road Trip with Friends

Well, Gian took off like a madman, and about 25 minutes outside of Syracuse, he says, “hey guys, what should I do if a police has his lights on behind me? He has been following me with his lights on for two minutes.” As soon as he said that, before we even had a chance to glance back, the New York State trooper pulled alongside us (and we hadn’t even slowed down yet, such was Gian’s irrational thinking), and motioned angrily for us to pull over. Gian pulled the car over, and almost stepped out, but we all yelled at him to stay in the car; he may have had a gun drawn on him if he had stepped out of the car and walked towards the officer after pissing the guy off like that. The cop finally came over and immediately started yelling, and then gradually calmed down when he realized that it was all an (fairly) innocent mistake. When asked for the license, we hung our heads, because we knew he didn’t have the international driver’s license that he should be carrying, and we also knew that no one was supposed to drive the rental car except me, the one who rented it.

However, the small town cop became confused at the Italian and Polish driver’s licenses, and he asked if these were his international licenses. “They are international,” Gian said, and the cop walked back to his car to run them. We all let out our breaths then and started joking about the situation, and when the cop came back, Gian received two tickets for a total of $385.00, which was perfect, because Gian, with his diplomatic immunity (how cool is that!?!), could just disregard them if he wanted (he later paid them in full). No one let him drive again for the rest of the trip.

The rest of the trip, in which we didn’t allow Gian to drive, was uneventful. We stopped numerous times to buy gas, throw frisbees, dance at the recreation areas, and buy food. At a little after midnight on Monday morning, we passed through the Bronx and then we were finally home.

This road trip was short, at only two full days plus a few hours, but we crammed so much into it that it felt as if we were gone for at least twice that. I must say that at first I was skeptical, actually we all were skeptical, about how great this road trip would be. We all moaned and groaned, but Allie stuck with the program, and in the end it was the best road trip I’ve ever taken. Thanks to my friends, and thanks especially to Allie Feru, for that!

    • Jason, if you were not a part of this trip, there would be much less to be envious about! Hope we can do it again sometime, perhaps in your part of the world!
